Traditional Alternatives in a Nutshell

Traditional consultancies, interim management firms, and freelancing platforms represent three different approaches and models of providing external business support to client organizations.

Their pros & cons

Each of these models has its advantages and disadvantages. For example:

  • Some traditional consultancies have in-depth expertise but are very costly. Others are not as costly, but do not have the in-depth experience or competences needed.

  • Interim managers cover immediate leadership and specialized competence needs, but lack the breadth and depth of capabilities and experience to manage complex issues.

  • Freelancers and freelancing platforms are budget-friendly, but quality and reliability of resources is inconsistent, and they lack accountability and strategic guidance.

Where they are well suited

Due to their specificities, each of these three models is well suited in very specific cases and for specific clients, but far from ideal in many other circumstances.

  • Traditional management consultancies are suited to work with large organizations, on projects with very high intrinsic value (hence allowing for adequate returns on consulting fees) which entail making decisions and taking actions that cannot be corrected later (e.g. deploying very large capitals, in short time, on highly specialized, illiquid, and difficult-to-resell/repurpose assets).

  • Interim management services are typically well suited to address temporary leadership gaps, or to handle crises limited to one specific area of a business, for example a specific business function.

  • Freelancers and freelancing platforms, similar in some respects to interim management firms, are well suited to supplement clients’ staff in carrying out standard operating activities, or to work on narrowly scoped, short term projects.

Where they aren't ideal

Be it that they are too expensive, or that they have too narrow a set of capabilities, or that the quality of their resources is too inconsistent, or because of other drawbacks, traditional alternatives, as a whole, are not necessarily the best option to address a wide range of management consulting and business support needs, or for many clients, for example:

  • Strategic and critical projects, and complex transformations in medium, or smaller, enterprises

  • Strategic, critical and complex transformations in family offices and businesses
  • Incremental (kaizen-like) or agile transformations and improvements

  • Innovation and disruptive thinking

  • Mid-term and long-term operational support

  • Implementation of new strategies, wide-ranging transformations, and complex initiatives

  • Launch (especially accelerated launch) of new units and programs, or products and services, including within and by exiting organizations

  • Personalized executive coaching and leadership development

  • Government Agencies, Public Sector Enterprises, Nonprofit Organizations, Social Enterprises in general

  • Projects pertaining community development and social impact, or entailing community engagement and broad stakeholder consultation

Key drawbacks of traditional consulting, interim management, freelancing services

What Sets Us Apart

What sets us apart from traditional consultancies, interim management firms, and freelancing platforms stems from us having blended and, more importantly, how we blended management consulting, interim management, and freelancing services into one integrated service model.

We offer:

  • the breadth and depth of experience, the analytical capabilities and strategic insights, and the level of accountability of the best traditional consultancies,

  • the seniority, the in-depth industry and functional expertise, and the reaction speed of interim management firms,

  • the convenience and reach of freelancing platforms,

  • and the flexibility and adaptability to client needs of all the three models combined,

  • at competitive rates.

What sets us apart from traditional consultancies:

  • Highly experienced teams: on average out project teams have at least twice as many years of experience as the typical teams deployed by traditional consultancies

  • Blend of management consulting and industry experience: management consultants in our core team worked both in top-tier consultancies and industry, and are complemented by independent consultants with similar experience, and by industry experts

  • Flexibility and personalization: we offer lean consulting and interim support solutions that traditional consultancies don’t, and customize every aspect of an engagement: team composition and size, client team participation, remuneration

  • Small, incremental engagements: we enable clients to deliver smaller, incremental projects and transformations, lowering the investment in consulting and risks

  • Agility and speed: flexibility and customization of services enable clients to engage us as quickly, following simplified procurement processes (saving valuable time and hidden costs), while our highly experienced teams work more practically and identify and deploy solutions faster than traditional consultancies

What sets us apart from interim management firms and freelance platforms:

  • Core team of top-tier management consultants: irrespective of the type of engagement and intervention, our teams always include highly experienced top-tier management consultants, who provide the breadth and depth of capabilities and experience to manage complex issues

  • Cohesive and tested teams: we staff project teams so that majority of team members have worked together in the past, including our independent consultants; one of our senior core team members is always involved in every engagement, irrespective of how many resources are assigned to a client

  • Consistency: the seniority, experience and selection process of our team members, and the involvement of our senior management consultants in every engagement ensure consistency in the quality of our teams and their output

  • Independence and accountability: irrespective of the assignment, we operate as management consultants rather than contractors, taking ownership of and being accountable to achieve results, and maintaining our independence to ensure we advise clients as objectively as possible

  • Managed services: irrespective of engagement, intervention, and team size, we manage our teams and resources, leaving our clients as free as possible of the additional complications of managing external contractors
